Polygamie à la française ou l’occident exotisé

Résumé

Cet article est une exploration des effets de connaissance résultant de l’approche exotique en anthropologie. L’objet d’étude est la monogamie occidentale telle qu’elle peut être vue du dehors, et plus particulièrement la forme qu’elle a récemment prise en France. La monogamie est d’abord analysée du point de vue d’un intellectuel africain qui en critique les effets pervers pour mieux souligner l’importance de conserver en Afrique l’institution de la polygamie. L’étude reprend ensuite la conception anglo-saxonne du mariage pour montrer qu’en France, terre officiellement monogame, l’union libre autorise en fait les citoyens à entrer dans des relations matrimoniales polygynes et polyandres vraies. On constate enfin qu’une analyse fondée sur la théorie française de l’alliance aurait conduit à des résultats opposés.

Abstract

This article explores theforms of knowledge generated by exotic anthropology. The subject discussed is Western monogamy as observed from ontside, and more specifically the form it has recently taken in France. The institution of monogamy is first analysed from the perspective of an African social critic who underlines its negative side-effects so as to emphasize the importance for Africa to preserve its polygamous institutions. The paper goes on by adopting the Anglo-Saxon definition of marriage in order to reveal that in a nation officially monogamous such as France, « l’union libre » de facto allows French citizens to enter into true forms of polygynous and polyandrous marriages. In the last section, the author shows that this analysis would have yielded different results had it been madefrom the perspective of French alliance theory.
