Métathéorie, théorie et recherche empirique : l’analyse de la dépendance et du « gender » en sociologie du développement Metatheory. Theory, and Empirical Research: The Analysis of Dependance and Gender in the Sociology of Development

Résumé

Un bilan des travaux contemporains en sociologie du développement, dans sa version néo-marxiste, conduit rapidement à un constat de crise sinon d'impasse. L'objectif de cet article est de montrer comment l'impasse pourrait être transcendée: en effet, un retour critique sur les notions de métathéorie et de théorie en regard de la recherche empirique permet d'identifier la confusion actuelle entre la métathéorie et la théorie et fournit des éléments essentiels pour mieux articuler la métathéorie à la recherche empirique. Un programme de recherche en sociologie du développement est esquissé sur la base de la compatibilité des théories différentes que sont les théories du renversement de la dépendance et les théories féministes du gender et du développement.

Summary

Taking stock of contemporary studies in the sociology of development, especially in its neo-Marxist version, leads one rapidly to the acknowledgement of a crisis, if not of an impasse. The object of this paper is to show how this impasse could be transcended. A critical re-examination of the notions of metatheory and of theory as they relate to empirical research makes it possible to identify the confusion we now see between these two, and supplies the necessary elements for a better linkage between metatheory and empirical research. A program of research in the sociology of development is outlined on the basis of the compatibility between such different theories as those of dependency reversal and the feminist theories of gender and development.

Un balance de los trabajos contemporáneos en sociología del desarrollo, en su versión neo-marxista, conduce rápidamente a constatar una crisis o por lo menos un punto muerto. El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar como este punto muerto podría ser transcendido: en efecto, una mirada crítica sobre nociones de meta-teoría y de teoría en relación a la investigación empírica permite identificar la confusión actual entre la meta-teoría y la teoría, y proporciona los elementos esenciales para articular mejor la meta-teoría a la investigación empírica. Un programa de investigación en sociología del desarrollo es esbozado sobre la base de la compatibilidad de teorías diferentes que son las teorías del derrocamiento de la dependencia y las teorías feministas del gender y del desarrollo.
