Résumé

Engagé, en 1972, comme professeur au département d’histoire de l’Université Laval, Jean Simard y poursuivra une carrière fructueuse d’enseignement et de recherches, partagée en trois décennies d’activités axées sur de grandes enquêtes ethnographiques de terrain, sur la transmission des savoirs et savoir-faire par des formats autres que le livre, ainsi que sur le bilan des analyses scientifiques et des publications savantes. Un vaste cycle d’enquêtes systématiques (décennie 1970) mènera à la constitution de grands corpus ethnographiques portant sur l’inventaire de milliers d’artefacts et mentefacts tirés par Jean Simard de l’art et de la religion populaires. La décennie qui suit (1980) explorera de nouvelles approches de transmission des savoirs et savoir-faire, des années effervescentes, fébriles, caractérisées chez Jean Simard par la fièvre de communiquer au grand public des pans occultés et originaux de son patrimoine religieux, au moyen de séries radiophoniques, filmiques ou grâce à des expositions qui alerteront le grand public sur la déperdition de son grand héritage religieux. Le besoin se fait sentir enfin chez Jean Simard, dans la décennie 1990, de revenir à sa mission première d’être un marqueur scientifique de la culture québécoise. La publication de deux livres majeurs, Les Arts sacrés au Québec (1989) et Le Québec pour terrain. Itinéraire d’un missionnaire du patrimoine religieux (2004) rendront compte d’une trentaine d’années de recherches et de publications savantes qui vaudront à son auteur l’attribution par le gouvernement du Québec de la plus haute distinction dans le domaine du patrimoine, le Prix Gérard-Morisset 2017.

Abstract

Hired in 1972, as a professor in the History Department at Laval University, Jean Simard led a successful teaching and research career spanning three decades of activities that focused on major ethnographic field surveys, on the transmission of knowledge and know-how other than through book publications, and also on the dissemination of the results of extensive analysis. A vast cycle of systematic surveys carried out during the 1970s lead to the formation of a great ethnographic corpus in which are inventoried thousands of artifacts and mentefacts drawn by Jean Simard from the fields of art and folk religion. During the following decade, Jean Simard explored new approaches in the study of knowledge transmission. These years were characterized by his constant and intense efforts to communicate to the general public many original and little known aspects of religious heritage, through radio, film series or through museum exhibits. In all these ways, Jean Simard sought to increase public awareness about the dangers of losing our great religious heritage. During the 1990s, Jean Simard finally saw fit to return to his original goal of contributing to the scholarly study of Québec culture. Two major publications, Les Arts sacrés au Québec (1989) and Le Québec pour terrain. Itinéraire d’un missionnaire du patrimoine religieux (2004) presented results from 30 years of scholarly research, earning Jean Simard the highest distinction in the field of Québec heritage in 2017, when the Québec government awarded him the Prix Gérard-Morisset.
