Résumés
Abstract
I propose to read Simmel’s developments on the law of the individual as an attempt to solve the problem of modern culture, that is the increasing discrepancy between life and objective mind. I understand the law of the individual as a regulative idea of culture (in the sense of Bildung), which is, at the same time, relational and individual: as an ideal of the most fruitful relation and synthesis between individual life and objective formations of culture.

Biographical note
Matthieu Amat is first assistant in Modern and Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Lausanne. He has published many papers on the philosophy of culture and Simmel’s thought, notably “Religion, mystique et crise de la culture. Perspectives sur Georg Simmel”, Revue de l’histoire des religions, 2015 and “Kulturphilosophie als Kosmologie”, Zeitschrift für Kulturphilosophie, 2015. Dr. Amat has also contributed to the Georg Simmel Handbuch bei Suhrkamp (to be published in 2018) and is currently translating Simmel’s Schulpädagogik.
