La prédominance de l’automobile comme mode de transport dans la région métropolitaine de Montréal est le fruit d’une longue évolution. Dans cet article, l’augmentation constante de la motorisation depuis le début du siècle est mise en relation avec la forte expansion démographique et avec le mouvement vers la banlieue, qui tend à favoriser l’automobile comme mode de transport, au détriment des transports en commun. Au début des années quatre-vingt, on continue d’assister à la progression de l’automobile, tandis que les transports en commun stagnent.Cela s’explique en partie par la poursuite de la tendance à la déconcentration urbaine, ainsi que par le phénomène de vieillissement démographique. À l’horizon 2001 et au-delà, on doit s’attendre au maintien de ces tendances de long terme.

Abstract

The predominance of the automobile as a mode of transportation in the Montreal metropolitan area is the result of a long evolution The constant progression in the number of cars since the beginning of the century is analysed in relation to population growth and suburbanization which has tended to favour the automobile to the detriment of public transit. Still in the 80s the progression of the automobile continues and public transit stagnates. This is due partly to the continuance of suburbanization and to the aging of population In the year 2001 and after, these long term trends may be expected to continue.
