La Révolution tranquille à l’épreuve de la « nouvelle » historiographie et de l’approche post-coloniale. Une démarche exploratoire Applying the «new» historiography and the post-colonial approach to an interpretation of the Quiet Revolution: an exploratory process

Ce texte porte sur les thèmes de la spécificité du Québec d’avant la Révolution tranquille et de sa « normalité » depuis les années 1960. Plus précisément, les auteurs cherchent à analyser le phénomène de la Révolution tranquille, toujours définie, selon eux, comme une période de rupture d’une société traditionnelle à une société moderne, à partir de trois principales problématiques ayant trait, chacune, à trois courants disciplinaires différents: d’abord l’histoire et la critique par l’historien Ronald Rudin de la « nouvelle historiographie », ensuite la philosophie politique et l’importance des courants libéraux et communautariens au Canada, enfin la problématique du post-colonialisme, très développée dans le monde anglo-américain, particulièrement en théorie littéraire et en sociologie, depuis, notamment, la parution en 1978 de l’ouvrage d’Edward Saïd, Orientalism. C’est dans l’articulation de ces trois problématiques, absente dans la littérature existante, que les auteurs définissent l’originalité de leur démarche. Plus précisément, les auteurs pensent que la dichotomie factice entre « traditionnel » et « moderne », une dichotomie incidemment reprise par Ronald Rudin dans son analyse de la littérature dite révisionniste, constitue un problème politique où l’on trouve en filigrane la marque du colonialisme.

Abstract

This article examines the themes of Quebec's specificity prior to the Quiet Revolution and its «normality» since the 1960's. More precisely, the authors aim to analyse the phenomenon of the Quiet Revolution, which has always been defined, in their opinion, as a period of rupture from a traditional society to a modern society. Three main problematics are applied, each concerning three different disciplinary trends: First of all, history and criticism as considered by Ronald Rudin, promoter of the «new historiography»; secondly, political philosophy and the importance of liberal and communitarian trends in Canada; and finally, the problematics of post-colonialism, which has been developed extensively throughout the Anglo-American world, particularly in the areas of literary theory and sociology, mainly since the 1978 publication of the book Orientalism by Edward Said. It is through articulating these three problematics, which are absent from the existing literature, that the authors define the originality of their process. More precisely, the authors believe the artificial dichotomy separating traditional» and «modern», a dichotomy to which Ronald Rudin incidentally returns in his analysis of so-called revisionist literature, to constitute a political problem tinged with the mark of colonialism.
