Un site exceptionnel d’archéologie industrielle en Belgique : Les établissements et la cité ouvrière du Grand-Hornu, 1820-1835

Résumé

Les établissements du Grand-Hornu, qui constituent aujourd’hui un site privilégié de l’archéologie industrielle, furent pratiquement à l’origine de ce domaine de recherche en Belgique. Après un bref aperçu sur la façon dont on put préserver le site au cours des dernières décennies, cet article offre une double perspective : celle de l’archéologie industrielle et celle de la Public History. La première montre l’intérêt de l'étude architecturale de ces établissements pour la connaissance d’un passé industriel. Car il ne s’agit pas seulement d'une architecture industrielle, mais aussi d’une architecture de prestige. Il y eut d’ailleurs souvent équilibre, ou même harmonie entre le grandiose et le fonctionnel dans la construction des bâtiments principaux de cette entreprise minière. D’un autre côté, notre analyse voulut aussi répondre, initialement, aux intérêts des responsables et des visiteurs du site. C’est pourquoi elle s’efforce d’éviter l'abstraction, ou le recours à une terminologie trop technique.

Abstract

The Grand-Hornu industrial plant, which is today an important site for industrial archeology, was virtually at the origin of this field of research in Belgium. After a brief survey of the way in which the site has been successfully preserved over the last decades, this article presents a dual perspective: from the viewpoint of industrial archeology and from that of Public History. The first approach shows the value of an architectural study of the plant for our knowledge of the industrial past, for this is not only functional architecture, but also grandiose architecture affirming social prestige. Moreover, there was often a balance or even a harmony between the grandiose and the functional in the construction of the main buildings of this mining enterprise. On the other hand, this analysis also tries to take into account the interests of those in charge of the site and of tourists who visit it. For this reason it avoids abstraction or highly technical terminology.
