Les transferts ascendants au Bangladesh, une décision familiale?

Résumé

Cet article apporte un éclairage sur la prise de décision dans la famille, dans le domaine des transferts versés par les enfants adultes à leurs parents âgés. D’un côté, un enfant doit composer avec son éventuel conjoint pour s’occuper de ses parents et beaux-parents. De l’autre, chaque enfant peut compter sur un éventuel soutien de ses frères et soeurs pour la prise en charge des ascendants. Nous cherchons ici à savoir dans quelle mesure il importe de prendre en compte ces effets de fratrie pour comprendre les solidarités ascendantes. Nous examinons l’existence d’éventuels arrangements intrafamiliaux à partir de l’enquête MHSS réalisée en 1996 au Bangladesh. Nos résultats économétriques pour les transferts ascendants indiquent que les comportements des frères et soeurs ne sont pas indépendants les uns des autres.

Abstract

This paper sheds light on the decision-making process within the family and deals with private transfers given by adult children to their elderly parents. On the one hand, each child has to bargain with his/her spouse to care for parents and parents-in-law. On the other hand, each child may rely on a potential support from other siblings when helping the parents. We wonder here whether it matters to account for arrangements between siblings to explain the pattern of upstream transfers. We examine the possibility of intra-family arrangements using the MHSS survey conducted in 1996 in Bangladesh. Our econometric results show that the transfer decisions of the various siblings are not independent from each other.
