Abstract
Two plat formal stratjgraphic sequences occur on Islesboro, Penobscot Bay, Maine. The older Seven Hundred Acre Island Formation is at least 200 m thick, its base is not exposed, and it makes up fault-bounded blocks of siliceous colour-banded dolomitic marble, muscovitc-rich quartzite, coarse-grained splendent muscovitc-gamet-staurolite-andalusite schist, and calcareous metapclite, with minor garnet amphibolile and amphibotitc. It was initially metamorphosed to lower amphibolile fades and was later retrograded to lower grcenschist fades. The lower amphibolile facies metamorphism is Neoproterozoic (670 to 650 Ma) as inferred from the *°Ar/,9Ar high temperature release spectra of hornblende separates. A U-Pb zircon age of 646.7 ± 2.7 Ma obtained for a pegmatite that intruded deformed rocks is taken to be the minimum age of the Formation.
1 he platformal Islesboro Formation probably unconformably overlies the Seven Hundred Acre Island Formation. It is primarily turbiditic pclitc with many beds of quartzite, impure dolomitic marble, some conglomerate, and a few feldspar-rich volcaniclastic beds and is thought to be either Neoproterozoic or Cambrian. It was metamorphosed only to lower grcenschist lades, possibly in the same event that retrograded the Seven Hundred Acre Island Formation.
Geochemical interpretations of minor and trace clement analyses of six amphibolile and four schist samples from the Seven Hundred Acre Island Formation show that the protoliths of the amphibolile samples were intermediate between tholeiitic and uithin-plate type basaltic flows or dikes that intruded attenuated continental crust, or were eroded from these basalts. Four amphibolile and three schist samples analyzed for Pb isotopes were found to be enriched in radiogenic Pb. The Pb isotonic compositions are similar to those in peri-Oondwanan basement rocks from Atlantic Canada.
Hie peri-Oondwanan Islesboro block was placed against the peri-Oondwanan Middle and Late Cambrian Kllsworth terranc on the cast by significant l^atc Silurian strike-slip faulting. The Late Silurian or Early Devonian Turtle Head dextral strike-slip fault separates the Islesboro block from the pcri-Gondwanan St. Croix terranc to the west. The timing and nature of the movements of these faults are given from offsets of the isograds around the zircon-dated Laic Silurian Sedgwick (iranite (419.5 ± 1.4 Ma) and South Penobscot Intrusive Suite (419.2 ± 2.2 Ma). These temnes and others like them in Atlantic Canada make up a composite terranc that is different from the composite Avalonian icrranes sensu siricto of southeastern New England and Atlantic Canada. Hie composite peri-Gondwanan terranc that included the Islesboro block was amalgamated with the margin of ancestral North America in the Silurian.

Kile avait initialcment subi un mctamorphisme jusqu'au facies amphibolitique infericur ct die a plus tard r^gressc" a un facies de schistcs verts has l.c mitamorphismc du facies amphibolitiquc inftricur est survenu au cours du ProterozoVquc supeYieur (670 a 650 Ma) d'apres cc qu'on pcut deduire des spectres dc liberation a haute temperature *°Ar/39Ar des cements de la hornblende. L'age de 646,7 -t 2.7 Ma obtcnu par datation au U-Pb a partir de zircon dans 1c cas d'unc pegmatite faisant intrusion dans les roches deTormees est consider comme I'fige minimal de la Formation.
La Formation en plate-forme d'lslesboro recouvre probablement dc facon discordante la Formation de Seven Hundred Acre Island. Cetle formation est principalement constituec de pilite lurbiditiquc comportam de nombreuses stratcs de quartzite. dc marbre dolomitique impur, d'une certaine quantite de conglomerat et de quelqucs straies volcanoclasliques riches en fcldspath. On pensc qu'ellc rcmonte au ProteVozoTquc supc>ieur ou au Camhrien. Llle s'est seulement metamorphisee jusqu'a un facies dc schisles verts has. possiblcmcnt au cours des memes circonstanccs que cclles ou a rigresse" la Formation de Seven Hundred Acre Island
Une interpretation gcochimique des analyses des elements mineurs et des elements traces de six amphibolites et de quatre schistcs de la Formation de Seven Hundred Acre Island revelc que les protolithes des amphibolites ont consume des stades intermediaires entre les ecoulements ou les filons inlrusifs basaltiques tholeiiiiqucs et intra-plaques ayant fait intrusion dans la croute coniinentale attenuce, ou qu'ils proviennent de rerosion de ces basaltes. On a constate que quatre amphibolites et trois schistcs dont on a analyse les isotopes de plomb etaient enrich is en plomb radiogenique Les compositions isoiopiqucs du plomb son I semblables aux roches du socle pcVigondwanien des provinces atlantiqucs.
Ix bloc perigondwanien d'lslesboro a ete place contre le terranc perigondwanien du Cambrien moyen el superieur d'Fllsworth a Test par la formation de failles dccrochantcs prononcees au cours du Silurien superieur. l.a faille dctrochame dexirale du Silurien superieur ou du Devon ien inferieur de futile Head scpare le bloc d'lslesboro du terranc perigondwanien de St. Croix a I'Ouest. I.e moment et la nature des mouvements dc la formation de cos failles nous sont fournis par les dicalages des isogrades obicnus a proximite du granite du Silurien superieur (situe par dotation a panir de zircon a 419.5 ± 1,4 Ma) ainsi que la suite Penobscot intrusif du Sud (419.2 t 2.2 Ma). Ces terrenes et d'autrcs commc cux dans les provinces dc I'Atlantique constituent un terranc composite different des terrenes composites avalonicns. au sens strict. presents dans le sud-cst de la Nouvelle-AnglctcrTc ct dans les provinces de I'Atlantique. I.e terrane composite perigondwanien qui comprend le bloc d'lslesboro a ele fusionnc a la marge de I'A men que du Nord anccstrale au cours du Silurien.
