Éloge de la frivolité. Tolérance et idéal mondain au XVIIe siècle

Résumé

On propose de rechercher dans l'idéal mondain, élaboré par les salons parisiens et la cour de France au milieu du XVIIe siècle, l'une des origines du mouvement intellectuel qui fait évoluer en principe moral universel l'idée de tolérance limitée jusqu'alors à une pratique chrétienne de l'indulgence charitable. Trois modalités de l'ethos mondain peuvent avoir concouru à cette évolution : l'éthique de la " complaisance " nécessaire à la belle conversation ; le modèle de l'honnête homme, régi par des principes universels de raison et de mesure ; la conception d'une vérité " à géométrie variable ", fondant une attitude de relativisme tempéré envers toute forme de valeur et de critère. Le Misanthrope de Molière (1666) définit en termes dramatiques le débat suscité par cette théorie et cette pratique nouvelles des relations sociales et affectives, en plaçant l'intransigeance d'Alceste et la complaisance frivole de Célimène sous le regard surplombant de Philinte, qui anticipe par son acceptation flegmatique et souriante des défauts et des vices inhérents au genre humain une morale éclairée de la tolérance par principe.

Abstract

In this article, I propose to locate within the worldly ideal developed in the Parisian salons and the French court in the mid-17 th century one of the origins of the intellectual movement that caused the idea of tolérance, hitherto limited to a Christian practice of charitable indulgence, to evolve into a universal moral principle. Three modes of the worldly ethosmay have contributed to this development : the ethic of"compliancy''as a requirement for sophisticated conversation ; the model of the honest man,governed by the universal principles of reason and modération ; and a"sliding scale" type of truth that established a basis for an attitude of tempered relativism toward any form of truth and criterion. Molière's le Misanthope(1666) defined,in terms of drama,the debate rising out of this new theory and practice of social and affective relationships ; it placed the intransigence ofAlceste and the frivolous indulgence of Célimène beneath the all-encompassing gaze of Philinte, who, with his phlegmatic but smiling acceptance of the defects and vices inhérent to mankind, anticipated an enlightened ethics of tolerance founded on principle.
