Résumé
La modélisation d’accompagnement (ComMod) est une démarche d’appui à la gestion des ressources naturelles qui a émergé en opposition aux approches classiques, dites descendantes. Utilisée par les praticiens du développement pour accompagner les parties-prenantes dans la résolution de conflits, elle est aussi utilisée par les chercheurs pour créer des connaissances sur les objets complexes que sont les systèmes écologiques et sociaux (SES). Cette étude montre comment ComMod a permis de créer un outil de recherche et d’élaboration de scénarios sur le fonctionnement d’un SES de front pionnier en forêt dense à l’est du Cameroun. Durant trois années, un processus ComMod a été engagé avec des agriculteurs et des chasseurs-cueilleurs ; il a abouti à la co-construction du modèle AgriForEst (Agriculture et forêts à l’Est Cameroun) traduit sous forme d’un jeu de rôles et de plateau. L’utilisation du jeu en dehors de son arène de concepteurs a servi de validation du modèle par les acteurs locaux. Nous présentons comment les participants se sont approprié l’outil, et ont ainsi développé leur capacité à projeter les états futurs du système. Nous discutons enfin la signification des résultats obtenus : les connaissances produites sont de nature démonstrative et non explicative. Une session de jeu montre comment les femmes et les hommes changent leurs stratégies, et créent de nouvelles normes en réponse aux changements, changent la forêt et sont changés en retour. AgriForEst montre comment se façonne un paysage. Il faut y jouer ou le voir jouer pour s’en rendre compte.

Abstract
Companion Modelling (ComMod) is a support method for natural resource management that emerged in response to top-down approaches. Used by practitioners to support stakeholders in conflict resolution, it is also used by researchers to generate with stakeholders’ involvement, knowledge about complex socio-ecological systems (SES). The approach is well suited to the modelling of systems at the heart of which lies the decision making process of human agents. This study shows how Companion Modelling made it possible to create a research and scenario development tool for the exploration of how a pioneer front operates in a dense forest setting in eastern Cameroon. For three years, a ComMod process was conducted with farmers and hunter-gatherers; it culminated in the co-construction of the AgriForEst model (Agriculture and Forests in East Cameroon), which was then translated into a board and roleplaying game. Gaming with stakeholders other than those involved in the design served as validation. We present here how the participants took ownership of the tool, and in so doing developed their ability to anticipate future states of their system. Finally, we discuss the signification of the results obtained: the knowledge produced is of a demonstrative nature, and not explanatory. A game session shows how women and men change their strategies, and create new norms, in response to changes, change the forest in the process and are changed in return. AgriForEst shows how a landscape is shaped. One has to play it or see it played to realize it.
