Temps de l’un, temps de l’autre : Beauté baroque et Nadja

Résumé

Bien qu'écrits dans un style presque opposé, Beauté baroque de Claude Gauvreau et Nadja d'André Breton présentent plusieurs affinités. Les deux textes flirtent de manière ambiguë avec l'autobiographie, notamment parce que le récit de soi s'y construit à partir de l'histoire d'un autre. Cet autre est une femme qui, dans sa manière de vivre, incarne l'idéal surréaliste ou automatiste de désir et de liberté, et qui pour cela est associée au possible, au devenir. En revanche, c'est aussi cette manière d'être qui condamne Nadja comme Beauté baroque à la mort, symbolique pour la première, charnelle pour la seconde. Chacun des récits présente donc, à travers son personnage éponyme, un conflit temporel entre le possible et la fatalité. Le présent article essaie de décrire ce conflit et sa résolution en analysant la structuration de l'expérience du temps que proposent ces textes à travers leur sémantique, leur composition narrative et leur rythme. La différence de traitement du conflit temporel entre les deux récits se révèle emblématique de divergences importantes entre les poétiques surréaliste et automatiste.

Abstract

Though written in almost opposite styles, Claude Gauvreau s Beauté baroque and André Bretons Nadja display several similarities. Both texts flirt ambiguously with autobiography, in particular in that the narration of the self is constructed from the story of the other. This "other" is a woman who, in the way she lives her life, embodies the surrealist or automatist ideal of desire and freedom, and who is therefore associated with possibility and becoming. On the other hand, this way of being also condemns both Nadja and Beauté baroque to death: symbolically speaking for the former, in physical terms for the latter. Both stories, through their eponymous characters, thus show a temporal conflict between possibility and fate. This article attempts to describe this conflict and its resolution by analysing the structuring of the experience of time in these texts through their respective semantics, narrative composition and rhythm. The difference in how the temporal conflict is dealt with in the two stories is shown to be emblematic for significant differences between surrealist and automatist poetics.
